TOEFL Junior Challenge - Hanoi 2014 official competition rules

1.  Introduction

TOEFL JUNIOR CHALLENGE is an English proficiency contest tailored directly towards Secondary school students. This contest uses tests with international standards provided by ETS - TOEFL Junior and TPO (TOEFL Practice Online) as the evaluation criteria.

Designed specifically for teenager students, TOEFL Junior is currently a viable tool to evaluate English proficiency of secondary students in a comprehensive manner in both academic and social areas. In conjunction with TPO - the official practice test for TOEFL iBT measuring directly 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, The organizing committee hope that TOEFL Junior Challenge 2014 will assess the current capabilities of students, compared to the international standard as well as to peers from others secondary schools nationwide. Especially, it will help parents to guide their students to next steps of their English language-learning journey.

In 2014, IIG Vietnam – The only official representative of Educational Testing Service (ETS) is cooperating with Departments of Education and Training nationwide to organize the TOEFL Junior Challenge 2014 on a national scale.

3.  Participants

- Secondary school students aged 11 -15 (grades 6 to 9 in the 2014 - 2015 school year).

- Selection criteria: At least 7.0 in English in the 2013 – 2014 school year.

- Registration is voluntary.

4. Registration Methods

Method 1: Register at school:

  • Students register for the competition at their secondary schools.
  • Secondary schools will make a list of candidates and send  to the organizer before 09/10/2014 via email:toefl.hn@iigvietnam.com, then post the signed and sealed document to IIG Vietnam (recipient: Ms. Tran Thu Phuong – Business Development Department, 75 Giang Van Minh, Ba Dinh, Hanoi).

Method 2: Register directly at:

  • IIG Vietnam - 75 Giang Van Minh, Ba Dinh, HN.

Opening times: 8h00 to 12h00 and 13h30 to 17h00 from Monday to Friday; 8h00 to 12h00 on Saturday.

  • IIG Training – 24 Nguyen Hong, Dong Da, HN.

Opening times: 8h00 to 12h00 and 13h30 to 17h00 from Monday to Sunday.

5. Competition process

(*) Round 1 (Preliminary round):

- Deadline to register: 09/10/2014

- Test structure: Candidates will take the multiple choice English test – designed by experts from ETS, including 42 reading questions in 50 minutes (excluding the test procedures time).

- Test fee: 100% sponsored by IIG Vietnam.

- Test date: 19/10/2014 (Sunday)

- The results of Round 1 will be announced within 2 weeks from the final test date.

(**)Round 2 (Semi-final round):

- The candidates will take the TOEFL Junior test including 126 questions (42 listening questions; 42 grammar and vocabulary questions; and 42 reading questions) in 115 minutes (excluding time for the test procedures).

- Test date: 30/11/2014 (Sunday)

- Test fee: 660.000 VND

- Payment period: From 03/11/2014 to 22/11/2014.

- For students who register for the competition at school:Students will make payments at their schools, then the schools will transfer the payment to IIG Vietnam in one of the following ways:

+ Method 1: Paying at IIG Vietnam, Hanoi Head Office - 75 Giang Van Minh, Ba Dinh, Hanoi – Contact: Ms. Tran Thu Phuong or Mr. Le Minh Cuong – Tel:  04.37732411 / 04.37736240 (ext: 711, 162).

+ Method 2: Paying by Vietcombank with the following details:

The school representatives who transfer the payment to IIG Vietnam, please send the list of students who made the payment to: toefl.hn@iigvietnam.com;

- For students who register at the organizer’s registration sites:Students will make the payment in one of the following ways:

+ Method 1: Students will make the payment at IIG Vietnam’s offices: 75 Giang Van Minh, Ba Dinh, Hanoi or 24 Nguyen Hong, Dong Da, Hanoi.

+ Method 2: Paying by Vietcombank with the following details:

- All the students participated in Round 2 will receive ETS’ internationally recognized TOEFL Junior score report; after 30 working days, the score reports will be sent to the secondary schools; the candidates will contact their school representatives to receive the score reports.

- Candidates who have signed up but for personal reasons could not make it to the test sites on Test day of round 2 can still retake the test according to IIG Vietnam test schedules in December 2014 and January 2015. These candidates will receive the international score report issued by the Educational Testing Service. (Note: these results will not be counted towards the TOEFL Junior Challenge 2014 and candidates who fail to participate in test dates within the stated time will not be refunded).

- The results of Round 2 will be announced within 2 weeks from the final test date.

(***) Round 3 (Final round):

- Test structure: Candidates will take the TPO (TOEFL Practice Online) test, which include 4 parts (36-56 reading questions, 34-51 listening questions, 6 speaking questions; and 2 writing questions) in 200 - 250 minutes (excluding test procedures time).

- Test fee: 100% sponsored by IIG Vietnam.

- Test date (expected): 18/01/2015 (Sunday)

- The results will be announced at the Closing Ceremony (expected to be held in January or February 2015)

6. Prizes Structure

6.1. Individual prizes in Hanoi(****): (With the estimated number of 50 candidates in the Final round in Hanoi; the number of winning candidates will increase or decrease accordingly to the actual number of candates participating in the Final round in Hanoi):

  • 1 First Prize;
  • 5 Second Prizes;
  • 10 Third Prizes;
  • 34 Consolation Prizes;

6.2. National individual prizes(****): The Regional’s results will be compared against TOEFL Junior Challenge 2014 Round 3’s results from all the cities in the country to compete for 1 National First prize, 3 National Second Prizes, and 6 National Third prizes.

(****)The prizes will only be awarded to the candidates in the final round of the competition. In the case that the number of candidates with the same scores exceeded the given number, the organizer will award the same prizes, and the value of the prizes will be calculated based on the total number of the prizes and divided equally for the winning candidates.

6.3. School prizes in Hanoi: The top 10 schools in the competition will receive presents and merit certificates from the Organizer.

(*****) The school prizes will only be awarded to schools that have candidates in the Final round.

7. What to bring to the competition

- Round 1’s candidates need to bring a photocopy of their birth certificate/passport. Candidates will receive the TOEFL Junior Challenge 2014’s attendance form at their test room.

- Candidates participating in Round 2 and 3 need to bring the attendance form (provided by the organizer) with their photo attached to complete the test procedures.

- If the candidate does not have the attendance form, s/he needs to bring a photocopy of his/her birth certificate/passport. The candidate is not allowed to enter the competition without the attendance form or the identification documents.

- TOEFL Primary Challenge 2014 is a competition of international standards; therefore the candidates will not be allowed to bring pencils, draft papers, or any documents, IT and mobile equipment such as: cell phones, beepers, copying devices… into the exam room (the Organizer will provide the candidate with pencils).

Notes for the TOEFL Junior Challenge 2014’s candidates:

  1. The TOEFL Junior Challenge 2014 is a competition for secondary school students (grades 6 to 9). The candidates that do not belong to this group are not eligible to take part in the competition. 
  2. The information registered by the candidates has to be correct. If there is any incorrect information, the Organizer has the right to cancel the candidate’s result. The candidates need to check their information on the list of candidates carefully, and report back to the Organizer any incorrect information.
  3. The candidates are required to be at the exam venue 30 minutes before their exam. The candidates need to read their exam time and date carefully. If the candidate shows up at the wrong allocated time and the exam has started, s/he will not be allowed to take the exam.
  4. The scores of each Round will be sent to the primary schools. The candidate can contact their school representatives where they registered to know the detailed results and receive the score report provided by ETS.
  5. The candidates who do not attend the Closing Ceremony can contact and receive the prizes at IIG Vietnam offices. The prizes of the competition will be given out in 3 months from the Closing Ceremony date. If the candidate does not collect their prize in the time stated, the prize will no longer be effected. All the amendments related to the prizes (cash, presents, merit certificates, score reports…) need to be sent to the Organizer before the 3 month period ends. After that, the Organizer will not take care of the above cases of amendments.
  6. During the whole competition process, if there is any problem arises, the Organizer will take the final decision.
